WHO ARE WE?

BARNABY!, formerly known as MSL, has returned. Now condensed to a power trio, but somehow sustaining an even brighter spark, a sharper edge. Harrison Cannon (bass) and Mike Rasimas (drums), used to back up Mimi Sun Longo (vocals and guitar), but now they’re given equal billing, and as a result, the band has never sounded this tight, this unified in its purpose. The band has played together on and off for seven years. During the pandemic, they made it official as “MSL” with the vinyl release of the propulsive Fated/Faded in 2021. But for GOOD DAY BARNABY!, they decided to take on a moniker that would be more representative of the band’s energy.

GOOD DAY BARNABY! is the second release from the newly-christened three-piece, formerly known as MSL. The album swings wildly between exuberant and quietly introspective, track by track, and often within the same song, tracing the twists and turns of fate and the relationships that it brings and takes away. As pandemic fears gradually subsided, the band’s sound has exploded out of isolation, their music propelled by a new boldness. One hears echoes of the downtown grit of the Strokes in Longo’s riffing, the exuberant bounce of the Pixies and Breeders in Cannon’s bass, and the animal rollick of Keith Moon in Rasimas’ drumming, all converging on a sound that skips lightly from era to era, scene to scene, turning on a riff or a fill. It is a sweet and sour sound, of love and of loss. A slurry of emotion, chugged quickly. You’ll be tasting the memory for days, weeks.
